Climate risks affect all arid and semi-arid areas of the planet. However, some areas are particularly vulnerable to their effects due to their sensitive nature and the large number of people living in them. In these exposed areas, climate change threatens the livelihoods of many people, especially those of the poor. Practical climate risk management in these regions would greatly help increase the resilience of these communities.
By focusing on analysis of the main challenges to climate risk management in semi-arid zones, and the identification of areas and sectors in which climate risk management represents a challenge in Africa and Asia, this report contributes to the knowledge base for the management of climate risk to build economic resilience in semi-arid regions. It also suggests new research directions, and recommends that policy makers and private sector actors should give greater consideration to the climate risk management dimension.
