Abid is Executive Director of the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and a Co-Principal Investigator for PRISE. He earned his PhD in Food Security from the Natural Resources Institute (NRI), University of Greenwich, UK. Currently, he is serving as member of National Economic Advisory Council; member of Advisory Committee of National Planning Commission; and member of the National Advisory Committee jointly formed by Government of Pakistan and the USAID for Pakistan Strategic Support Programme.
He is also called on to give policy advice on various other policy forums/advisory boards at national, regional, and international levels, and is an adjunct professor at the Institute of Business Management Sciences, University of Agriculture Faisalabad and is serving on the Boards of Studies of various universities. He has also served as a Member of the Board of Management of Pakistan State Oil (PSO), and chaired the PSO Board’s Audit and Finance Committee from 2010-2012.
Prior to joining the SDPI he served as Head of Programmes, OXFAM GB Pakistan. He has also conducted intensive research on “Resilient Livelihoods”, “Food Insecurity”, “Regional Trade”, and the “Political Economy of Development”. His other research interests include institutional reforms, non-traditional security issues, and energy governance. Abid was part of the official delegation of Government of Pakistan to WTO Hong Kong Ministerial Conference in 2005, and was also part of official delegation in Rio+20 United Nations Sustainable Development Conference in 2012. He also represented Pakistani civil society at the Doha and Cancun Ministerial Conferences of WTO (2001 and 2003), as well as the World Food Summit.
Abid gives lectures on the different aspects of sustainable development to parliamentarians, academia, government officials, journalists, and development practitioners, and has also been published in many national and international journals. He also contributes his policy analysis on sustainable development issues in major national and regional newspapers and is invited as a guest analyst in the electronic media. He tweets at @Abidsuleri
