Sam Fankhauser

Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment

Sam is Director at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and Deputy Director of the ESRC-funded Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy, both at the London School of Economics. His research interests are in the economics of climate change, energy, and the environment. Over his 27-year career he has also published widely on climate resilience, carbon policy, and climate change legislation. Sam has extensive experience interacting with decision makers. Sam is also a Non-Executive Director of CDC Group, the UK’s development finance institution, and a Fellow of the Energy Institute, the professional body for the UK energy industry.

Before joining LSE, Sam was Deputy Chief Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and an energy economist at the World Bank. From 2008 to 2016 he was an inaugural member of the UK Committee on Climate Change. Sam has studied economics at the University of Berne (Switzerland), the London School of Economics, and University College London.

In PRISE, Sam is a Co-Principal Investigator and oversees the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment work, and leads the cross-CARIAA working group on economics
